This Simple Mobility Exercise Takes Less Than 2 Minutes
If your body feels stiff after sitting for hours, you may think you need a long stretching routine to loosen up.
As a personal trainer, I have found that one of the biggest reasons people skip mobility work is simple: they make it too complicated.
The good news is that you do not always need 20 different stretches. Sometimes, one simple movement can be enough to get your body moving and interrupt long periods of stiffness.
One of my favorite options is the world’s greatest stretch — a mobility exercise that combines a lunge, hip movement, upper-body rotation, and a gentle stretch into one sequence.

How to Do It
You only need a small amount of floor space.
- Start standing tall with your feet about hip-width apart.
- Step forward into a comfortable lunge position with your right foot.
- Place both hands on the floor or on blocks beside your right foot.
- Slowly rotate your upper body and reach your right arm toward the ceiling.
- Return your hand toward the floor and gently straighten your front leg as comfortable.
- Move back into the lunge position.
- Step back to standing and repeat on the other side.
Spend about 30 to 60 seconds on each side, moving slowly and with control.
You can complete a quick round in less than two minutes.
Why I Like This Movement
This exercise allows you to move through several areas at once, including your hips, legs, upper back, and shoulders.
That makes it a practical option when you do not have time for a full mobility session.
But there is an important point — you do not need to force yourself into the deepest possible position.
As a personal trainer, I recommend treating mobility exercises like controlled movement practice. Use a range of motion you can manage comfortably, then gradually allow your body to adapt.

When Should You Do It?
You can use this movement as a quick break from sitting, as part of your warm-up, or during a short mobility routine.
For example, try it:
- Before a workout
- After sitting at your desk for a long time
- During a morning movement routine
- Whenever your body feels generally stiff
If you are using it before intense exercise, keep the movement controlled and dynamic rather than holding long, aggressive stretches.
The Bottom Line
Mobility does not always require a complicated routine or a large amount of time.
A simple movement like the world’s greatest stretch can help you practice moving your hips, legs, and upper body through comfortable ranges of motion in just a couple of minutes.
Start slowly and focus on control rather than forcing a deeper stretch.
