This Gentle Yoga Pose Can Help Release Lower Back Tension

If your lower back feels tight after sitting, standing, working, or simply getting through a busy day, your first instinct may be to stretch as deeply as possible.

As a personal trainer, I would suggest taking a different approach.

When your back feels tense, forcing yourself into an aggressive stretch is not always the answer. Sometimes, a gentle movement that allows your body to relax can be a more comfortable place to start.

One simple yoga pose I often recommend for general lower-back tightness is Child’s Pose.

Why Child’s Pose Can Feel Good for a Tight Back

Child’s Pose is a gentle position that allows you to bring your hips backward while lengthening your arms in front of you.

Depending on your body and the variation you choose, it can create a comfortable stretching sensation through the back, hips, and shoulders.

But the biggest benefit is not about forcing flexibility.

As a personal trainer, I like this pose because it encourages you to slow down and breathe. After spending hours sitting in the same position, simply moving your body into a different, comfortable position can sometimes feel refreshing.

How to Do Child’s Pose

  1. Start on your hands and knees.
  2. Slowly move your hips backward toward your heels.
  3. Allow your knees to stay together or comfortably apart.
  4. Reach your arms forward or rest them alongside your body.
  5. Lower your torso only as far as feels comfortable.
  6. Take slow, relaxed breaths.

Stay in the position for around 20 to 60 seconds, depending on your comfort.

You do not need to force your hips all the way to your heels. If the position feels uncomfortable, place a cushion or folded towel under your chest or between your hips and heels.

A Simple Adjustment That Can Make It More Comfortable

If you feel restricted when your knees are close together, try widening them slightly.

This can create more space for your torso and make the position feel easier for some people.

You can also experiment with where you place your arms. Reaching forward may create more movement through your shoulders, while resting your arms alongside your body can feel more relaxing.

Don’t Stretch Through Pain

This is important: lower-back tension and lower-back pain are not always the same thing.

If you feel sharp, severe, or worsening pain, stop the movement. If you have persistent back symptoms or are concerned about a specific injury, seek guidance from an appropriate healthcare professional.

As a personal trainer, I always encourage people to listen to their body rather than trying to copy the deepest version of a yoga pose online.

The Bottom Line

Child’s Pose is not a magic cure for lower-back problems, but it can be a simple and gentle movement to try when your back feels generally stiff or tense.

Start comfortably, breathe slowly, and avoid forcing the position.
