This Beginner Yoga Pose Relieves Lower Back Stiffness in Adults Over 50

After 50, simple movements like getting out of bed, bending forward, or even standing for long periods can become uncomfortable when your lower back feels stiff. As a personal trainer, I encourage adults to take these changes seriously rather than accepting stiffness as an unavoidable part of aging.

Reduced physical activity, prolonged sitting, and declining muscle strength can contribute to mobility problems. While life can become more challenging with age, so does our responsibility to stay active, eat well, and maintain our physical health.

One simple exercise worth trying is the Sphinx Pose (Salamba Bhujangasana), a beginner-friendly yoga position that gently extends the spine.

Why Try the Sphinx Pose for Lower Back Stiffness?

The Sphinx Pose (Salamba Bhujangasana) is a beginner-friendly yoga pose that is performed while lying on your stomach and supporting your upper body on your forearms.

This position encourages gentle spinal extension, which may help some people to reduce stifness and improve relaxation with movement. It is also easier to approach than many advanced backbends, making it a useful starting point for beginners.

A research paper published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that yoga can provide modest improvements in back-related function and pain for some people with chronic lower back pain. However, the Sphinx Pose itself has not been established as a standalone treatment.

How to Do the Sphinx Pose

  1. Lie on your stomach: On a yoga mat stretch your legs behind you, keeping them relaxed and at hip-width apart.
  2. Position your elbows: Place your elbows beneath your shoulders, with your forearms flat on the floor and your palms facing down.
  3. Lift your chest gently: Now, press lightly through your forearms to raise your chest while keeping your hips and pelvis grounded.
  4. Relax your shoulders: Keep your shoulders away from your ears, your neck neutral, and your breathing steady.
  5. Hold and release: Stay in the position for 10 to 20 seconds and then slowly lower your chest. Repeat the pose for up to two or three times without forcing the movement.

Important Note: Stop immediately if you experience sharp pain or any pain spreading down your leg. If you have significant back problems, consult a healthcare professional before trying this pose.
