Want to Start Yoga at Home? I’m a Personal Trainer — Here’s a Simple Routine for Beginners

Want to try yoga at home but feel unsure where to start?

You are not alone. As a personal trainer, I often see beginners avoid yoga because they think they need to be flexible, own special equipment, or follow a long and complicated routine.

You do not.

A small amount of clear floor space and a few minutes are enough to get started. The goal is not to perform advanced poses. It is to move your body with control, practice balance and mobility, and gradually become more comfortable.

Here is a simple beginner routine you can try at home.

  1. Start on your hands and knees with your hands under your shoulders and knees under your hips.
  2. Slowly round your back and allow your head to move comfortably downward.

  4. Move slowly and avoid forcing either position.

2. Child’s Pose — 20 to 30 Seconds

  1. From your hands and knees, gently sit your hips back toward your heels and reach your arms forward.
  2. Lower your torso only as far as feels comfortable.
  3. If needed, place a cushion under your chest or between your hips and heels for support.
  4. Take slow, relaxed breaths.

  1. From your hands and knees, lift your hips upward and backward.
  2. You do not need to straighten your legs completely.

  2. Keep your torso comfortably upright and gently shift forward until you feel a comfortable stretch at the front of the hip on the kneeling side.

6. Seated Forward Fold — 20 to 30 Seconds

  1. Sit with your legs extended in front of you.
  2. Keep a slight bend in your knees if needed.
  3. Slowly hinge forward from your hips and reach only as far as feels comfortable.
  4. You do not need to touch your toes. Focus on relaxed breathing and controlled movement.

Keep Your First Sessions Simple

You can complete this routine in around 10 minutes. If you are new, perform it two or three times per week and focus on becoming comfortable with the movements.

As a personal trainer, my advice is not to worry about making every pose look perfect. Use support, bend your knees, or shorten the range of motion when needed.

Yoga should meet you at your current ability — not force you to match someone else’s.

The Bottom Line

Starting yoga at home does not need to be complicated. Begin with a few basic movements, move slowly, and give yourself time to learn.

Consistency matters more than advanced poses.
